Our visit to Split began with a walking tour through its Old Town — including viewing and learning about the Roman Peristyle, the Cathedral of St. Domnius, and Jupiter's Temple — within the walls of Roman Emperor Diocletian's immense palace. Then we took off on our own to enjoy the museums, and relax along the waterfront promenade.

Split (Day 8)

The centerpiece of Split is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Diocletian's Palace, an ancient fortress built in the 4th century. The palace is a maze of narrow alleys, hidden courtyards, and imposing gates, and is home to a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants. We also explored the city's historic old town featuring a variety of well-preserved medieval buildings and landmarks.

Cathedral of St. Domnius (Day 8)

The Cathedral of St. Domnius was formed from an Imperial Roman mausoleum, with a bell tower; strictly the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the bell tower to Saint Domnius. Together they form the Cathedral of St. Domnius. Consecrated at the turn of the 7th century AD, it is regarded as the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world that remains in use in its original structure, without near-complete renovation at a later date.

Jupiter's Temple (Day 8)

Eminent Scottish architect Robert Adam considered this temple one of the most beautiful European monuments. in front of it one of several completely or partly preserved granite sphinxes was placed that Diocletian brought from Egypt.
